A poetry slam will be held at lunch Thursday (May 18) at the Bullard library. All students are welcome, admission is free, and participants will receive a certificate for taking part.

Poetry slams are competitions where contestants recite poetry to audiences. Thursday’s contest will be judged by three Bullard students and is open themed. Students are welcome to recite poems about any subject, as long as it is appropriate for school.

Junior Kate Swertfager, who’s organizing the event, said 20 students are signed up to take part. She decided to take over when other students stopped organizing the slam.

Librarian Ms. Baker said poetry slams are worthwhile because it gives students the opportunity to stand in front of peers and speak.

“Self-expression allows them to be heard creatively,” she said.

No prizes will be given to students. The slam has been described as a “friendly” competition. While no rewards will be given, there will be snacks for people who attend and participate.
