I interviewed Armen Torigian (Vice Principal and former Bullard Student) and a few students about how they feel about Bullard’s safety, and what can be done to make us all feel safer and more comfortable on campus.

Q: What are things that you have done to make Bullard more safe?

A: Mr.Torigian: One of the things that we have done is added another campus safety. Also the reasons we are so strict about dress code is actually for our safety. Because, we know if someone isn’t dressing how our dress code says they’re supposed to dress then that might indicate and give us a hint that they’re not supposed to be on our campus and they are potentially dangerous.. Same reason I am a big fan of having students wear ID’s, because if we were to see a student not wearing one, we would know that they don’t belong here.

Q: How are things different from when you were a student here?

A: Mr. Torigian: When I went here there was only about 2 safety’s here at Bullard. We obviously have a lot more now, but back then things were different. Back then there wasn’t as many school shootings going on as much as there is now, so we kind of needed to make adjustments and add more safety personnel to our roster.

Q: Are we where you want us to be?

A: Mr.Torigian: Heck no. I know that there is much room for improvement, not only in our safety but in everything else as well. I want to give back to the community that gave so much to me so I will never stop trying to make as many people happy and comfortable here at Bullard. I want all of us to have pride and joy in the fact that they are Bullard Knights. I know that nothing is perfect, but if we work hard enough at it we can hit a point to where the majority of us feel happy and safe.

After getting great answers from Vice Principal, Mr. Torigian, I decided to go around and ask students if they had any ideas on how to make Bullard a safer place.

Q: How could we make Bullard more safe?

Jerric Cerda: I think that having even more security around the perimeter of the school would make me feel more safe. But, to be honest, I feel pretty safe already.

Q: What can staff do to make you feel more safe?

Juan Cedillo: If the school had a better plan to go to for if there was a school shooting then I’d feel more safe.

Q: What changes here will make you feel safer?

Jordan Carlson: I feel like I’d feel more safe if we had more police around the campus. I don’t really see them very often here but I know if there were to be more then I would feel way more safe.
