‘A Dog’s Purpose’ is wonderful – but take tissues

“A Dog’s Purpose” tells the story of a loving dog (voiced by Josh Gad) who tries to discover the meaning behind his own existence. The dog finds himself reincarnated as different breeds several times while on this mission, although at some points he wonders if there is any point to a dog’s life.

Gad did a great job narrating the dog’s point of view. A lot of movies try too hard to be cute, and it can ruin the tone of the movie. Gad balanced cuteness with seriousness, resulting in some beautiful moments where you find yourself crying and others where you break out laughing.

The funniest part had to be when Bailey (first life as a dog) is watching his owner, Ethan (K.J. Apa), and his girlfriend, Hannah (Britt Robertson), kiss, and he says that they like to “wrestle and lick each other.”

Another thing I loved is how they handled the dog’s deaths and reincarnations. The deaths are really simple and peaceful for the most part, but they may catch the viewer off-guard. Before you know it, tears are rolling down your face. I’m not going to spoil anything, but I will say that the last words he says before he dies in each life are beautiful and make you realize how you might see a dog as only part of life, but to that dog, you are his life.

Perhaps because the movie is told from the dog’s point of view, and he goes through four owners in the movie, none of the actors who play the owners really stood out. They did a good job, but no one really delivered anything special. I was kind of disappointed that I wasn’t able to make a stronger emotional connection with the human characters. That would have made the movie even better, in my opinion.

“A Dog’s Purpose” is a fantastic movie. I highly recommend it.
