“Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” tells the story of two federal agents who work together to maintain peace, but when an unknown threat arises, they must race against the clock to save the universe.

I hated the first 20 minutes of the movie. I can’t reveal much, because that  would lead to some spoilers. There was no true introduction to characters or anything, which left me and the people sitting nearby completely lost.

The special effects were on point throughout the entire movie. There’s a scene where we see an alien species on its home planet by the beach on a sunny day that was absolutely incredible. All of the space scenes looked great and had few lags.

One thing that impressed me was how often and smoothly the movie changed tone. Some movies try to blend romance and action together but end up falling flat and looking dumb. But “Valerian” did a great job of blending those together to make them feel natural and even adding a bit of comedy to keep the audience’s attention.

Last but not least, I think the movie was missing a strong villain. I never felt worried or anxious, because I knew right off the bat that the villain was all talk.

“Valerian” is worth a shot if you are a fan of the “Star Trek” or “Star Wars” movies.
