*Friend Request is rated R for violence.

On September 22, 2017, I went to watch Friend Request, a horror movie directed by Simon Verhoeven. The movie follows Laura, a common college girl who is very active on social media. She isn’t aware of a strange girl named Marina who stalks her. After Laura and Marina have an incident, in the trailer it shows Marina killing herself and possessing Laura and the people in her life through social media. A movie about a a girl possessing people through social media sounds kind of odd, and it is what it sounds like. The story line of the movie wasn’t good but it did scare me to where I needed to shut my eyes.

Towards the middle, the protagonist Laura is looking through a mirror and a demonic entity is looking at her. Laura gets startled as it screams at her. The entity itself is very realistic and horrifying to look at. The makeup artist Mathew Howard-Tripp out did himself for the special effects. The mirror entity was absolutely stunning. It will for sure give you nightmares.

Laura’s friends start dying in weird ways one by one. They all die because they can’t delete their Facebook accounts and if Marina adds them as friends, then that’s a sign that they are next. I found that very stupid because what if her friends don’t have social media? In this movie their lives are revolve around social media. They are relating to this generation and how our lives are practically on our phone, but not in a very good way. It does give you the shivers to look at your phone after watching this film.

One of the things that stuck out to me is how the transition in flowed so smoothly. In one scene, there are two demonic entities that had to turn into children, and then back to the entity again. The smoothness of those transitions were great. It looked so realistic and terrifying.

The movie’s story line didn’t follow through all that well. There were some holes in it, but it did its job and scares you. I would recommend this movie if your searching for something to keep you up at night, otherwise this isn’t the movie for you.
