On April 26 a high school student from South Carolina collapsed in class as a result of a caffeine overdose. The student consumed three caffeine laced drinks which included a cafe latte, a large Diet Mountain Dew, and energy drink which is not specified.

A similar case occurred in 2012 when a 14 year old girl who had a pre-existing heart condition died from a heart attack after consuming two monsters on consecutive days.

These cases have caused debate on whether or not energy drinks are safe to consume and should be sold to people who are underage, so we went around campus and asked people who are frequent coffee/energy consumers what they think.

We asked a few students and teachers how they moderate their coffee intake.

“You drink so much so your tolerance is too high for caffeine to have any effect on you.” says senior, Clayton Fox.

Some people like to moderate their intake by only drinking one cup of coffee a day while others prefer drinking so much that they become tolerant to the effects of caffeine.

“I only drink coffee or tea once a day and then for the rest of the day I drink water.” says senior, Sarah Ortiz.

“I try to avoid constant snacking and drinking soda often.” says Vice Principal Secretary, John Pizano.

“I only have one cup of coffee a day and don’t drink energy drinks.”  says Bullard’s nurse, Lisa Aday.

Caffeine laced drinks can be extremely dangerous and should be moderated in order to live a healthy lifestyle. Please exercise caution when drinking energy drinks and other heavily caffeinated drinks.
