A hip-hop dance group called “Dance Empowerment” visited the Bullard campus for a noon rally to finish off Black History Month. The theme of the rally was “Stop the Violence,” and it coincided with protests across the country in light of the high school massacre in Parkland, Florida, on Valentine’s Day.

Wayne Hurley, the dance instructor of the group, showcased his 20 student dancers, from Fresno State, as they grooved and bopped with the sounds of hip-hop music in the quad. The echo of music bounced throughout the campus, beckoning the crowd to gather around the Greek stage. They weren’t exactly MC Hammer and his backup dancers, but they seemed to thrill many people in the crowd.

Hurley’s message was compelling. He challenged the crowd to “Just Say No” to drugs, and gave a shout out to the 17 victims who lost their lives at the hands of a disgruntled dropout who used a semi-automatic rifle to cause irreparable damage.

“What if I wake up for school, get ready, I’m eating some breakfast, pack a gun, come to Bullard, and shot 17 of you?” he challenged the crowd with the false scenario. “What would you do in the moment of time?”

As the crowd pondered his dare, he called up a student from each grade level to respond. One senior responded, “Honestly, I would try to make sure my friends are okay first and then everyone else.” A junior put it this way, “Honestly, I would be outta here.”

Some students say this was one of the most well-attended rallies of the year. Others were expecting more and wanted to see more student engagement that involved more dancing and better music. They felt the music was too old school.
