On Friday May 18th, there was a shooting at Santa Fe High School, committed by a student. According to officials, almost 200 school shootings have occurred this year.

In reaction to the shooting tragedy at Douglas Stoneman High School in Parkland, Florida, students rallied against gun prevention violence and demanded that something has to be done in order to make students feel safer at school. At Bullard, about 1500 students walked out of class in support of the movement and the latest tragedy in Texas devastated the leaders of the Bullard walkout.

“I was devastated because it’s another incident in a school,” said Ximena Benitez, one of the leaders of the walkout. “It shouldn’t have happened again. I was frustrated because even after what happened in Florida, nothing really has changed.”

Benitez does not regret participating in the walkout and still believes it was effective despite their efforts basically falling on deaf ears. “I don’t think the walkouts were totally meaningless because if no one reacted to what happened in Florida, we wouldn’t have protested. No one would have paid any attention, so at least we did bring nationwide attention to what is happening on school campuses.”

She and the others, Chris Olson and Secret Soto, were against the suggestion that teachers should be allowed to carry concealed weapons at school. She said even though the young gunman did not use a semi-automatic gun, she still is uncomfortable with the idea. “I still don’t think it’s wise for teachers to carry guns. I don’t think anyone’s prepared to shoot a child and if the teacher did have a gun and shot a child, then they would feel like they did something wrong, but taking someone’s life.”

Even though many students are rattled by the new tragedy, Benitez says they won’t plan another walkout because “the protest should have spoken for any other shooting.”
