We decided to interview Danielle Baker on the new Dorena Koopman Library that was added to Bullard High last year in 2016. They moved into the new library last summer.

“The transition was quite easy and very enjoyable,” she said, because they were moving into a brand new library. She likes the new library because there is a lot more space and it’s more open to the students.

Her favorite thing about being a librarian is that she can interact with kids from different grades and different departments since the library is the center where people can go to study. She also said that there really isn’t a bad thing about being a librarian, but people expect you to know all of the new technology because society is revolved around technology now.

As it turns out, she didn’t always want to be a librarian; she originally wanted to be an attorney. When she was a first grade teacher, she was put into the library after going into labor the on the first day of school. When she came back, they put her in the library again: “This is my 16th year in the library, and 27 years being an educator.” Her dream job would still be an attorney– that’s the only other job she would ever want to have.

“To be a librarian in Illinois, you need to be a teacher first. Then you have to get your endorsement or have your masters degree in library science and information technology,” she explained. To her, the most enjoyable aspect about high school was that she had a lot of freedom and being able to find herself. “When I got to college, math didn’t like me,” but she eventually discovered that she wanted to be an elementary teacher. “I like to work with the little kids and give them that foundation and let them think.”
