Hurricane Milton hit Florida residents with a CAT 5 hurricane on October 8th, 2024. This hurricane hit all of Florida with 18 inches of rain. This is the worst hurricane Florida has had since Hurricane Ian with 24 deaths, millions without power, and destruction across all of Florida. A reason two hurricanes hit one after the other (hurricane Milton and hurricane Helene) is because global temperatures are rising because these storm systems draw their energy from warm ocean water. U.S. Meteorologist John Morales discusses the serious effects of climate change starting now while choking back on tears, “I have been talking about this for 20 plus years, trying to alert people of what was coming, trying to advocate for climate action”. Climate change has been a severe problem for about 30 years ever since people started burning fossil fuels and cutting down forests and farming livestock. The effect climate change has on these storms is increased intensity, increased rainfall, slower movement, increased storm surge, increased flood risk, and increased frequency. All these effects increase hurricanes because there is an increase in warmer climates, and this creates stronger hurricanes. Ways to reduce climate change are to reduce fossil fuel use, switching to renewable energy, driving an electric vehicle, using public transportation, and conserving energy.
